About Us

ZA Betting is an independent comparison site for South African sports bettors. We research and review sportsbooks on the criteria that actually move money — payout speed, verified bonus terms, licensing status and payment methods available in rand — so you can choose where to bet with your eyes open.

We are not a bookmaker, and we do not take bets. We earn revenue through affiliate partnerships: if you visit an operator through this site and register, we may receive a commission. That relationship never determines a ranking. Operators cannot buy a better position, and every write-up on this site includes at least one genuine limitation, including for the sites we rate most highly.

What We Set Out to Do

The South African sports betting market has grown quickly, and so has the gap between what operators advertise and what bettors actually experience. A bonus that looks generous at the headline can be close to worthless once minimum odds, wagering windows and excluded bet types are read carefully. A payout time quoted on a landing page may not account for FICA verification, which is a legal requirement in South Africa and must clear before any first withdrawal is processed.

Our aim is to close that gap. Specifically, we work to:

• State licensing category plainly for every operator — South African provincial licence with a verifiable licence number, or offshore only — and explain what that means for regulatory recourse
• Report bonus terms in full: rollover multiplier, wagering window, minimum odds per selection, minimum leg count where applicable, and which bet types are excluded from wagering progress
• Compare withdrawal methods and realistic processing ranges without overstating speed or presenting advertised timings as guaranteed outcomes
• Cover payment options that South African bettors actually use — Ozow, Instant EFT, Capitec Pay, 1Voucher, OTT Voucher and bank EFT among them
• Reflect the sports that drive volume here: PSL and EPL soccer, Currie Cup and Springboks rugby, cricket including SA20, and horse racing, which is a significant vertical in this market

How We Research Operators

Every sportsbook on this site goes through the same review process. There are no shortcuts for operators who pay higher commissions, and no exceptions for well-known names.

1. Licensing verification — We check whether the operator holds a provincial bookmaker licence issued by one of South Africa's nine provincial gambling boards, and where a licence number and issuing board are supplied, we note that readers can verify status directly on the relevant provincial register or the National Gambling Board's verified-operators portal. Offshore licences — Curaçao Gaming Authority, Anjouan and others — are identified as such, with a plain statement that they carry no South African regulatory recourse.
2. Bonus terms — We read the full promotional terms, not the headline offer. We record the rollover requirement, the wagering window, the minimum odds per selection, the minimum leg count on multi-bet or accumulator requirements, the sports contribution rate (frequently 50% rather than 100%), and which bet types are excluded — cash-out bets, void legs and singles are commonly disqualified. We also confirm whether a free bet returns the stake or winnings only.
3. Payout methods and speed — We review the withdrawal methods available in ZAR, the minimum withdrawal amount, and the processing timeframes operators publish. We separate wagering completion from withdrawal processing — these are two distinct clocks — and we do not present advertised speeds as tested results.
4. Market depth — We assess which sports, leagues and bet types are covered, including in-play markets, bet builder availability, cash-out, and virtual or esports where offered.
5. App and mobile experience — Most South African bettors are on mobile. We review app availability, stability and usability on match day, based on published information and reader feedback rather than claimed testing.
6. Responsible gambling tools — We confirm the presence of deposit limits, self-exclusion and links to the National Responsible Gambling Programme. These are not optional features; they are part of what a trustworthy operator provides.

What This Site Does Not Do

Some things are outside our scope, and we think it is worth being direct about them.

• We do not publish tips, predictions or selections. Nothing on this site should be read as a guarantee of any outcome.
• We do not frame betting as a source of income, a form of investment, or a way to manage financial difficulty. It is not any of those things.
• We do not present FICA verification as an inconvenience or explain how to avoid it. It is a legal requirement under South African law and applies to every licensed operator before a first withdrawal can be processed.
• We do not recommend operators that lack a verifiable licence — either a South African provincial bookmaker licence with a confirmed number and issuing board, or a named offshore licence reported honestly as such.
• We do not collapse sports betting and online casino into one category. Sports betting is legal and provincially licensed in South Africa. Online casino is not licensable under the current National Gambling Act. The status of casino-style RNG games offered under a bookmaker licence is the subject of an ongoing dispute following an October 2025 Supreme Court of Appeal ruling; the National Gambling Board and some provincial boards take different positions, and this matter remains unresolved. We report the dispute rather than asserting a settled outcome.

The Regulatory Picture We Work Within

South African sports betting is governed by the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004, administered by nine provincial gambling boards under National Gambling Board oversight. Licences are issued by the provincial boards — the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, the Gauteng Gambling and Betting Board, the KZN Gaming and Betting Board, the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator and others — not by the NGB itself. A bookmaker licensed in one province may lawfully accept bets from players anywhere in South Africa; licence portability is national, and bettors do not need to find an operator licensed in their own province.

Offshore-licensed operators are accessible to South African bettors but fall outside the provincial regulatory framework. That means no South African regulatory recourse if a dispute arises. We report this wherever payout speed or bonus size is presented as a reason to consider an offshore platform.

The Remote Gambling Bill (B11-2024), which would create a national remote gambling framework, was before Parliament at the time of our last review. It is not law. A Treasury proposal for a 20% gross gambling revenue tax on online gambling has been published but not enacted. We treat both as proposals, not settled policy, and nothing on this site should be taken as tax or legal advice.

Our Independence and How We Earn Revenue

ZA Betting earns commission through affiliate agreements with the operators featured on this site. The existence of those agreements, and the size of any commission, does not determine rankings, scores or the content of any review. Our position is that a site bettors cannot trust is not worth running — and that means writing honestly about drawbacks, even for operators who are our commercial partners.
